Nissan Mechanic removing battery from car

Going too long without checking the transmission fluid in your Nissan can leave you victim to slow leaks and other maintenance issues. Your Nissan’s transmission is what transfers power from the engine to the wheels, so it’s extremely important to keep up on its maintenance. Not sure how to check the transmission fluid in your new Nissan or other vehicle? No worries, Tenneson Nissan is here to assist you! Read on to learn more about how to check your transmission fluid level.

Checking Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step Guide

Simply follow these steps to check the level and condition of your transmission fluid:

  1. First, turn the engine on for a few minutes, since the engine should be warmed up to properly check the level. (Make sure your car is in park with the e-brake set.)
  2. Find the transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive cars, it’s usually located to the right of the oil dipstick. (Check your owner’s manual if you’re having trouble finding it.)
  3. Remove the dipstick and touch the fluid, moving it around between your thumb and forefinger. The fluid should be nearly clear, with a pink-ish hue. If it looks dirty or gives off a burnt smell, take it to our service center for replacement immediately.
  4. Use a rag to wipe off the dipstick. Then insert it back into the vehicle. Pull it out again and check the level. If it’s under the “Full” marking, you’ll need to add more.
  5. Use a funnel to bring the fluid level up to the right spot. Be sure not to overfill it.

If you run into any issues, feel free to check with Tenneson Nissan, providing service to customers from Douglas and beyond.

Checking the Fluid in a Sealed Transmission

If you’re having trouble finding a transmission fluid dipstick, you may be dealing with what’s known as a sealed transmission. More common in later model years, the purpose of a sealed transmission is to limit the potential for transmission fluid loss. If your vehicle has a sealed transmission, it’s important to only have a certified technician, like those in our service center, perform work on the transmission and it’s internals. Our service technicians are more than ready to handle any transmission work you may need. It’s important to keep an eye out for the following red flags, which indicate a problem with your transmission, sealed or not:

  • During acceleration, there’s a noticeable delay when the gears shift.
  • You can hear strange noises when the gears change.
  • The gears hesitate before changing.

How Often Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

It’s a safe bet to check the fluid levels – including oil and transmission fluid – on your vehicle roughly once per month. You can consult your owner’s manual for a more specific maintenance schedule.

Transmission Fluid Basics

The modern automatic transmission is heralded as one of the most complex and involved mechanical systems in your vehicle. Remember these handy tips next time you check your Nissan transmission fluid:

  • If your vehicle hesitates before shifting gears, it might be due to low transmission fluid. However, it could be a sign of a more serious problem.
  • Checking the fluid on a manual transmission will usually require a jack to access a plug located beneath the car.
  • Your owner’s manual will recommend a particular type of transmission fluid. Since there are all different types, it’s important to use the right one.
  • Your owner’s manual should provide an exact figure, but generally you’ll want to replace your Nissan transmission fluid every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. The actual amount depends on your driving habits, type of transmission, and other factors.
