If you want to see how two sporty and rugged SUVs measure up, our Nissan Rogue vs. Toyota RAV4 comparison is here to help. With highly competitive specs and features at MSRPs that beat out many of their top competitors, these compact SUVs provide more for less – but which is the more appealing option?
After you read our guide, we’re confident you’ll come to the same conclusion we have: the 2024 Nissan Rogue. When you’re ready for an in-person examination of its 74.1 cubic feet of maximum cargo volume and standard driver-assistance features, schedule an appointment with our Tenneson Nissan advisors.
The first stop on our 2024 Toyota RAV4 vs. 2024 Nissan Rogue comparison is a look at trim levels, configurations, and pricing. The Nissan Rogue has four trim levels, each with standard FWD and available AWD. Choose among these options:
The Nissan Rogue delivers appealing standard features that enhance your commute, like a push-button start, comfortable cloth seating, and LED exterior lighting. On higher trims, you’ll get 18-inch or 19-inch wheels, leather appointments, a dual panoramic moonroof, and additional upgrades you can outfit your desired model with.
A similar selection is found on the Toyota RAV4, although with slightly less flexibility since some models don’t offer FWD as a drivetrain option. While some may think AWD is automatically better, FWD does have its perks. Where AWD offers better handling and off-road capability, FWD lightens the weight of your vehicle and can be sufficient for drivers who don’t want to hit the trails, meaning better fuel economy due to its smaller weight. That being said, the new Toyota RAV4 is available in these six trim levels:
Standard on the Toyota RAV4 LE are LED projector headlights, fabric-trimmed seating, and remote keyless entry. These appointments are similar to those found on the Nissan Rogue, as are the available perks on the higher trim levels for both models. Later in the lineup, the Toyota RAV4 has SofTex-trimmed seating and heated and ventilated front seats.
Although both models have excellent appointments and feature-rich trims, the Nissan Rogue is more stylish. For example, this SUV comes with leather upholstery on select trims, whereas the Toyota RAV4 does not.
Additionally, they both come at highly competitive MSRPs for their segment. The RAV4 offers a slightly lower starting price, but we’re talking about a difference between a couple hundred dollars – not thousands. We think with everything else the 2024 Nissan Rogue has to offer, it’s easily worth the marginally higher price point. Not to mention that these both beat out some of their top competitors – this time by numbers in the thousands – when it comes to MSRP.
While we’re on interior perks, let’s have a showdown between the cabin adornments of these distinguished models. Starting with a 2024 Nissan Rogue interior overview, we find that this vehicle is geared toward a youthful, fun-loving spirit. Signature LED lighting and a Black grille with Chrome accents come standard, making the exterior even more appealing with its sloping edges and bold lines. Higher trims have heated front seats, a driver’s side heated mirror, and a memory driver seat.
The Toyota RAV4 may be fun-loving and youthful, but it lacks the agile nature of the Nissan Rogue with its slightly wider size and taller frame. Another key difference between these two acclaimed SUVs lies in their applications. The Toyota RAV4, with its higher available towing capacity, is more suitable for off-roading and adventuring off the beaten path, while the Nissan Rogue is more appealing for date nights around town with its available leather upholstery.
Both vehicles have available heated front seats and a robust audio system on higher trims. The Toyota RAV4 does offer ventilation for seating on higher trim levels. However, the panoramic moonroof is only available on the RAV4 as a package and it doesn’t come with a power sunshade, whereas both come standard on the Nissan Rogue Limited trim.

Although the interior is impressive, the place where both the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4 shine is regarding performance. The Nissan Rogue is outfitted with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine that outputs 201 horsepower and 225 pound-feet of torque. The Toyota RAV4 is similarly operated by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 203 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.
These two models output similar horsepower values, but the Nissan Rogue outpaces in torque, offering over 40 pound-feet of torque more than the Toyota RAV4. Both vehicles are also proficient towers, with the Nissan Rogue and the Toyota RAV4 capable of towing 1,500 pounds when properly equipped on their standard trim levels. The Toyota RAV4, however, takes the crown in this realm with the Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims, which can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Towing is excellent, but the outfittings to ensure a higher towing capacity can poorly impact your vehicle’s expected fuel economy, another arena in which the Nissan Rogue shines.
With its FWD option across the lineup, this model produces a much more fuel-efficient powertrain. With the lighter FWD drivetrain, the 2024 Nissan Rogue S and SV get an EPA-estimated 30/37/33 MPG (City/Highway/Combined),1 and the SL and Platinum trims get an EPA-estimated 29/36/32 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).2
The Toyota RAV4 delivers something a little less fuel efficient as a trade-off for power, with an EPA-estimated 27/35/30 MPG (City/Highway/Combined)3 for the standard model. On the AWD Adventure and TRD Off-Road trims with the higher towing capacities, the Toyota RAV4 delivers an EPA-estimated 25/33/38 and 25/32/38 MPG (City/Highway/Combined),3 respectively.
Whether you want a front-wheel-drive vehicle or an all-wheel-drive option, the Nissan Rogue offers more versatility since every trim level in the lineup comes with either drivetrain. The Toyota RAV4 doesn’t offer the same variance, as some trims only come with AWD.

Are you looking for something specifically made for heading off-road? Let’s see how each SUV can tackle the great outdoors. First up is the Nissan Rogue, which remains consistent regarding capability across the lineup. Every trim level is available with standard front-wheel drive, but you can choose the all-wheel drive to get better road grip and traction. All-wheel drive is ideal for trails and off-roading, but the front-wheel drive can be functional.
The Nissan Rogue also comes outfitted with a continuously variable transmission, which offers easier gear shifting. This can be a necessity while out on the road. All-season tires and 8.2 inches of ground clearance join each trim level to help boost your travels and keep you and your family safe on every drive. If you’d like to bring jet skis or camping gear, the Nissan Rogue can assist by towing up to 1,500 pounds when properly equipped.
Higher ground clearance and enhanced towing capability can be found on the Toyota RAV4. This model gets up to 8.6 inches of ground clearance and can tow up to 3,500 pounds when properly equipped. The more off-road benefit comes from the TRD Off-Road trim level, which brings TRD-tuned suspension to the model.
SUVs are the vehicles that rest at the apex where utility meets comfort, and the two vehicles in our Nissan Rogue vs. Toyota RAV4 comparison don’t disappoint in this realm. Both models are spacious, offering two rows of seating, enough room for five passengers. But which model brings more to the table regarding space and dimensions? Based on the evidence, we think the answer is simple: the Nissan Rogue.
Let’s start with a look at differences in exterior dimensions. Immediately, we find the Nissan Rogue is a more appealing option with its 183-inch long frame, while the Toyota RAV4 is only 180.9 inches long. Although the Nissan Rogue is longer, the Toyota RAV4 is less than one inch wider and about half an inch taller than the Nissan Rogue. Even with this similar sizing, the Nissan Rogue outpaces its competitor in interior space.
Behind the rear row of the Nissan Rogue is 36.5 cubic feet of cargo volume, while the Toyota RAV4 has 37.6 or 37.5 cubic feet, depending on the trim.
However, when you fold the rear seat, you’ll see the Nissan Rogue take the lead. This expansion gives the Nissan Rogue a maximum of 74.1 cubic feet of cargo volume, whereas the Toyota RAV4 gets 69.8 cubic feet.
Our Nissan model doesn’t flounder in passenger volume, with up to 105.4 cubic feet total. The Toyota RAV4 has only up to 98.9 cubic feet in the same category.
The exterior dimensions of both vehicles are appealing, but the interior is also pleasantly comfortable and may provide you and your family with the stretching space needed. Here, we see the Nissan Rogue take the lead once again. This model has more to provide with passenger volume and cargo volume, and it also offers more legroom, with 41.5 inches in the front, while the Toyota RAV4 only gives 41 inches. Rear passengers in the Nissan Rogue will get 38.5 inches, but those in the second row of the Toyota RAV4 will only have 37.8 inches.

As two titans with excellent dimensions, interior space, and performance, it is no surprise that these vehicles rank well in testing. Due to the many Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue safety features, you can expect excellence from both models.
However, the Nissan Rogue gets more “Good” ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS),10 while the Toyota RAV4 has several “Good” ratings,10 along with a concerning “Marginal” rating.10 The Nissan Rogue, thankfully, does not suffer the same affliction, remaining a more appealing option for drivers who prefer the peace of mind of better ratings over utility.
Looking at the JD Power reliability score, the Nissan Rogue speeds ahead of the competition. This model is awarded an 83 out of 100 rating11 for reliability, while the Toyota RAV4 lags behind at 76 out of 100.11

If one of your biggest concerns is safety and reliability, we have even more excellent news regarding this SUV toss-up. As with many new models, the Nissan Rogue and Toyota RAV4 have various standard and available driver-assistance features. While these don’t directly impact the safety of the vehicle, they can help you stay aware of your surroundings and keep you abreast of debris or other obstacles on the road.
You’ll find things like Predictive Brake Assist, Blind-Spot Warning, and Lane Departure Warning on both models.
The Nissan Rogue will also deliver standard Rear Parking Sensors, while Front and Rear Parking Assist only come as an optional upgrade on higher-up models. Move up the Toyota RAV4 trim level to the top, and you will get this perk standard.
Both models also have a 360-Degree Surround View Camera available on higher trim levels.
Both models in our Nissan Rogue vs. Toyota RAV4 comparison are dependable with excellent ratings, safety features, and driver-assistance features, but what about coverage? These two SUVs have you covered in a wide range of situations with their robust warranties, but one offers more than the other: the Nissan Rogue.

In addition to all of these perks, you’ll also have up to 105.4 cubic feet of passenger volume and 74.1 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the rear row.
Pros of the Nissan Rogue:
Cons of the Nissan Rogue:
The Nissan Rogue is longer, but the Toyota RAV4 is slightly wider and taller than the Nissan Rogue. Although the Toyota RAV4 harbors a slightly larger width and height, the Nissan Rogue is more spacious, with additional front and rear legroom. The two models also have similar load compartment space. Why not tour the more spacious model between the two in our Tenneson Nissan showroom?
When comparing the two base models, we find that the Nissan Rogue comes out on top as the more fuel-efficient model in our comparison. The base model for this spacious performer delivers an EPA-estimated 30/37/33 MPG (City/Highway/Combined),1 while the base model for the Toyota RAV4 only gets an EPA-estimated 27/35/30 MPG (City/Highway/Combined).3
Both the Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue are intuitively fashioned with off-road capabilities. Both models have all-wheel drive available and come standard with all-season tires, although the Toyota RAV4 gets an all-terrain variety on the TRD Off-Road trim. However, the Nissan Rogue has better interior convenience for your off-road adventures, with leather seating and a standard heated steering wheel on the top two trims.
Deciding which model is better for you and your family depends entirely on your needs and desires for your SUV. If you want a stylish model designed to make you feel young with its intuitive controls and user-friendly cabin, we recommend the Nissan Rogue. However, if you find yourself constantly on the trails and don’t mind its boxy design, the Toyota RAV4 may be a good fit.
