How to Check Your Transmission Fluid: Step-by-Step

Checking your transmission fluid is simple and can be done from your driveway in just a few simple steps:

  1. Before getting started, make sure you park your car before you get out and open the hood. Let your engine run for a few minutes as the engine should be warm to get a proper transmission fluid level reading.
  2. Locate your transmission fluid dipstick. On front-wheel-drive vehicles, you’ll usually find it on the right side of your oil dipstick. Consult your vehicle owner’s manual if you’re not sure where to find it.
  3. Take out the dipstick and move the fluid between your thumb and forefinger. Your transmission fluid should be almost clear with a pink tint. If it gives off a burnt smell or looks dirty, take your vehicle to our expert service center to have it replaced as soon as possible!
  4. Wipe off the dipstick with a rag before putting it back. Pull it out again and check the transmission fluid level. If the fluid level is under the “Full” mark, you’ll need more fluid.
  5. Use a funnel to add more fluid until it reaches the correct level, being careful not to overfill!
